Borussia Dortmund 2021/2022 third shirt – the weirdest Puma template ever?

Like many other teams, Borussia Dortmund released 3 shirts for the 2021/2022 season: a home, away and third edition. The third shirt uses a very ‘uncommon’ Puma design many football (shirt) fans are not a fan of. In this post, we are going to take a look at the Borussia Dortmund 2021/2022 third shirt manufactured by Puma.

The design

Template and colors

The Borussia Dortmund 2021/2022 third shirt boasts a bold BVB 09 text, which is framed in two horizontal black lines. The Puma logo is centered on the chest area on the front of the shirt. Both sleeves got a small black Puma logo too. The PSV, Olympique Marseille and Borussia Mönchengladbach third shirts use this same template. The Borussia Dortmund 2021/2022 third shirt will mainly be used for European games.

When it comes to the colors, there are no surprises. This third shirt uses a neon-yellow base with black details. The neon-yellow color is also a reference to the Dortmund shirts from the 90s. The Evonik sponsor is used on this shirt, instead of the 1&1 sponsor that is used on both the home and away shirt.

Details and name set

The shirt has a pattern of small BVB 09 logos all over the front, which can be seen better in light. There’s another Borussia Dortmund logo on the back under the collar. Besides that, Borussia Dortmund decided to add another team crest next to the Puma logo on the front. Initially, this was only done for player version shirts, but the BVB 09 fanshop decided to add an extra Dortmund crest on fan’s version shirts too.

The name set used on the third shirt (Cup shirt) uses the same template as the name sets used on the home and away shirts. However, the name set of the shirt has a small, white line around it. The name set on itself is black and has a small Borussia Dortmund logo in it. Below the ‘Haaland 9’, we got the ‘Dortmund’ text in black as well.

Erling Haaland

I got this Borussia Dortmund 2021/2022 third shirt customized with the official name and number of Haaland. He uses the number 9 now, but when he just joined Dortmund, he played with number 17, just like Aubameyang did. Before joining Dortmund, he played with number 30 at Red Bull Salzburg. Even though I prefer shirts with less common numbers (like 17 and 30), I had to get this season’s third shirt, because the design of the name set looks great in my opinion.

Red Bull Salzburg

The Norwegian wonder kid surprised the whole world of football when he played at Red Bull Salzburg. He joined the Austrian club in the summer of 2018 and played 16 matches, in which he scored 17 goals. In the 2019/2020 season, Haaland managed to score 8 goals in 6 Champions League matches. The highlight of this performance was, undoubtedly, his hattrick against KRC Genk.

Borussia Dortmund

Haaland joined Borussia Dortmund in the winter of 2019. He made his debut against Augsburg. He scored 3 goals in his first game for the Schwarzgelben, assuring an away win. The Norwegian wonder kid also scored two very important goals against Paris-Saint-Germain in the Champions League campaign of 2019/2020. His efforts and hard work paid off, because he won the Golden Boy prize in 2020, being the best European player under 21.

Erling Haaland is still the most popular player of Borussia Dortmund up to this moment. Dortmund fans go crazy for him, because he has been of great importance for the club. He also became a meme on the internet because of playing style and height (1,94m). He’s seen as the big Norwegian who can do anything and who scares his opponents.

Final thoughts and my opinion

Although I was not a fan of this Puma template at first, it kind of grew on me. When I first saw it, I couldn’t believe my eyes, because it looked like a cheap and simple shirt. Somehow, the Borussia Dortmund 2021/2022 third shirt looks good. This probably has to do with the neon yellowish color of the jersey, that reminds me a bit of the BVB Ne90n 2021 special edition shirt. I have got to admit that this shirt doesn’t make it to the top 10 of most beautiful Borussia Dortmund shirts ever. The fact that Puma came up with this maybe too ‘simple’ design makes this shirt special if you ask me.

On the other hand, I’m not a fan of the way Puma uses this template on the third shirts of PSV, Fenerbahçe, AC Milan and Manchester City. This template makes these four shirts look really cheap. It has to do with the color too. Besides that, I just miss the team crest on these shirts. Dortmund did a good job by adding the BVB 09 logo onto the shirt later this season. The idea of the Puma design and template for the third shirts is to make up for the missing team crest by applying a pattern of small team crests all over the shirt. In the case of the Dortmund shirt, this looks good, but this is not the case for the Manchester City shirt, in my opinion. A clear team crest would have looked better on all the Puma third shirts for this season.
